Impact of Writing Style:
Ernest Hemingway's use of short and to the point sentences give his writing a blunt tone. He doesn't waste time giving the reader details of events unless they pertain directly to the story. One will not find superfluous descriptions detailing the layout of the kitchen, yet at the same time, the affect the influenza has on Schatz is described in order to give the story more depth. The quote, "He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as if it ached to move, (Hemingway 1)" helps the reader to visualize how ill Schatz is feeling as well as how a parent might feeling looking at the sick child. By "showing" the reader how Schatz feels, rather than "telling" him or her, Hemingway is able to create more depth in his character and the reader can then be drawn more deeply into the story. Hemingway's use of first person dialogue adds to the realness of the story and gives the reader the feeling of being thrown into the story.
